Press Release 1761 “Wednesday of the Retirees”

During the last few days, we witnessed some of the most repugnant displays of political and intellectual corruption in Argentina. The 2026 budget bill, submitted by the National Executive Branch, was to be debated in the National Congress. This budget is a veritable austerity tool at the behest of the US government, the IMF, and economic power. To the well-known outrageous statements made by government representatives were added other figures, such as several supposedly opposition governors, defending the position of further punishing the long-suffering working people, particularly retirees, as well as people with disabilities, those who work in public universities, research institutes, and other sectors of the State systematically attacked by President Javier Milei. Enrique Santos Discépolo already defined these types almost a century ago in the tango Cambalache: “…Today it turns out that being honest is the same as being a traitor!” That is what they try to make us believe.

They tried once again, as they had with the Basic Law, the strategy of voting on the bill in general and then by chapters rather than by articles. The idea was to lump various issues together in order to try to vote without differentiating the treatment of each point individually. But their calculations backfired, despite the impressive sums of money they distributed among some governors to secure their votes in the Chamber of Deputies, and the infamous Chapter 11 was rejected. Now the matter will continue in the Senate, where the ruling party has already had to agree to postpone until February the reactionary Labor Modernization Law, which should more accurately be called the Labor Exploitation Law. Meanwhile, the actions of multiple sectors of workers, including retirees, exposed the intentions of the government and its allies while also pressuring the labor unions to finally call for a march to Plaza de Mayo.

What has been done is not enough. On the immediate horizon, we have the debate on the labor reform bill, which must be rejected in its entirety. There is no room for half measures or concessions; it must be rejected. This is the most ambitious project against workers since the dictatorship. At this point, we must remember that the leading voice pushing it through the Senate is Patricia Bullrich, who was part of the Alliance government (with De la Rúa as president) and who secured a degrading law popularly known as the Banelco Law, precisely because of the credit card allegedly used to pay bribes to numerous senators, thus enabling the stripping of workers' rights.

It is important to emphasize that the so-called labor modernization project has very negative consequences for the social security system, both in terms of pensions and social welfare programs. This already provides a very strong indication of what awaits us regarding the pension reform project. We are going through a grave historical period surrounded by traitors to the people, whose objective is to drag Argentina back to the 19th century. They have the collaboration, whether voluntary or not, of conciliatory and capitulating figures who act behind the backs of the working people in the name of democracy and prudence. Therefore, as we often repeat, our fate will depend on what we are capable of doing in unity and organization.
